Allspice is a warming aromatic; it has both sweet and tangy flavors reminiscent of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Contrary to what one might think, the allspice is not an amalgam of spices (All spice in English) but the fruit harvested from a shrub that is found exclusively in the Western Hemisphere tropical, particularly in Central America and the Caribbean.
The Spanish discovered it in the Caribbean during Christopher Columbus' first voyages to the Americas. They introduced allspice to Europe in the 1600s. Since then, it has traditionally been used in our kitchens to make gingerbread cakes and cookies such a savory taste.
