Actions: Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, alterative (blood depurative), analgesic, antiscrofulous, anti-cystic, anti-tumor, anti-lithiasis, tonic, light diuretic, light laxative, digestive, spasmolytic, hypoglycaemic (diabetes), vermifuge, vulnerary and healing.
Indications: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to relieve symptoms of chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and pruritus (analgesic). Acts as an alterative (blood purifier) to help flush toxins through the kidneys, skin and to help relieve rheumatic pain.
History: In ancient times, it was used in the treatment of scrofula (hence its name); these are skin lesions (tubercles) that form in the lymph nodes. The shape of these lesions resembles the root of this plant and according to the doctrine of "signatures", it would be appropriate for treating scrofula. From the 16th to the 17th century, the figwort was considered the best plant against tumors and swelling. Its purgative and alterative effects make this herb still used today to treat skin problems and tumors.
Ingredient: Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa), organic dried herb top.
Dosage (Adults): Infuse a heaping tablespoon in a cup of boiling water, cover, steep for 5 minutes, strain. Drink 1 to 3 cups a day. Optional: add a little honey.
For external use (as a decoction or infusion): Place a clean cloth soaked in the infusion to relieve chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and pruritus. Helps heal wounds and injuries (vulnerary).
Make medicinal oil: (maceration of dried plants in vegetable oil, often olive). Just cover the dried plant with 2 to 3 times its volume with oil. This mixture can be heated at low temperature in a water bath or heated by the sun for several hours or even several days. After macerating this mixture of plants and oil, squeeze and strain.
This maceration allows the oil to extract the active ingredients (molecules with therapeutic actions) from the plants. To obtain an ointment, add beeswax to hot oil, empty into jars and let cool.
Precautions: Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have heart disease (may be hypertensive). It can increase myocardial contraction (avoid in case of heart problems). Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are breastfeeding or pregnant. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a health care practitioner
