History: Canadian hemlock was commonly used in traditional Native American medicine by several Amerindian tribes of North America. They used it to treat various ailments. The bark is rich in tannin, is still sometimes used in modern herbalism for its astringent and antiseptic properties. They used hemlock bark to relieve diarrhea, colds, coughs and stomach upsets. In external use, they used it as a poultice to heal wounds or to relieve the itching of the skin. They extracted tannin from the bark of the hemlock, which was used to tan leather, and was also used as a tincture (the oleoresin derived from the bark is dark reddish brown). Annedda, this legendary tree rich in vitamin C that gave life back to Jacques Cartier's crew by saving them from a certain death from scurvy, was probably eastern hemlock, fir, white spruce or thuja, or a mixture of many of these, this enigma still lasts ... and makes ethnobotanists and historians work.
