This herbal tea has a little bitter taste, it is digestive and can help stimulate the appetite (stomachic). Hops are traditionally used in herbal medicine to help relieve nervousness (soothing) and to help sleep (sedative, hypnotic, sleepy). This plant belongs to the (Cannabaceae) family just like Cannabis and contains valerianic acid, such as valerian.
The green cone is used around the female flower of the hops plant. Inside the cones (strobiles), there is a yellow powder rich in lupulin which has a galactogenic action (stimulates lactation) because of the presence of hormone (phytoestrogen).
Hops have been used for centuries to flavor beer, at least 10,000 years ago in Asia, and it has spread rapidly in Europe. Most beer brewers were made in the Middle Ages by monks. Its female inflorescences, were used to flavor beer since at least the twelfth century in Europe, when the abbess Hildegarde of Bingen (1099-1179) discovered the bitter and sanitizing virtues (conservatives of the hops), that thus allowed the beer of to keep better and longer. This was the first mention of hops in European literature, it would have been made in 1079. Since that time, in addition to malt, hops still remain the main ingredient of beer to give it its bitterness.
